Fried Okra Recipe
Fried Okra is a beloved Southern dish known for its crispy, golden exterior and tender inside. With its delicious crunch and rich flavor, it pairs perfectly with comfort foods like fried chicken, tomatoes, and cornbread. Ingredients:
- 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
- Prepare the Okra: Wash and dry the okra, then slice it into 1/2-inch pieces.
- Soak in Buttermilk: Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour buttermilk over it. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
- Prepare the Coating: In another bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Heat the Oil: Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat, aiming for a temperature of 350°F (175°C).
- Coat the Okra: Drain the okra from the buttermilk, allowing the excess liquid to drip off. Then dredge the okra in the cornmeal mixture, ensuring it’s well-coated.
- Fry the Okra: Fry the okra in batches for 2–3 minutes, stirring gently until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the okra using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot, with a sprinkle of salt or your favorite dipping sauce.
